Summary Note

A slightly variant title occurs on the added engraved title-plate: 'Palais Massimi A Rome. Dessiné et Publié Par F.T. Suys et L.P. Haudebourt A Paris, chez Vallardi, Quai Malaquai, No. 15 et à Milan, même maison, Place des Marchands.'

No publication-date is carried by title-page or title-plate (but the title-plate in the RIBA's copy is catalogued as carrying the date of 1818). The work was probably published in six parts, between 1818 and ca. 1821.

This was the first detailed account of the celebrated Palazzo Massimi alle colonne. The palazzo was begun by Baldassare Peruzzi for Pietro Massimo in 1532, and completed after the architect's death. It rises on an awkward, triangular site; and the chief feature of its curved façade (built over the remains of Domitian's Odeum) is a portico of six Tuscan columns. Its walls and ceilings were decorated by Pierino del Vaga and Daniele da Volterra. The book concludes with an account of the neighbouring Palazzo di Pirro, built for Angelo Massimo by Giovanni Mangone by about 1537.

The plates show plans, elevations, sections, views and details of the Palazzo Massimi (pl. 1-34) and Palazzo di Pirro (pl. 35-43).

The added engraved title-plate carries a vignette portrait of Peruzzi; the tailpiece of the Notice shows a street view; the headpiece of the Explication shows antiquities.
