Physical Description
[4], [i]-iv, 140 p., 48 pl.: illus.; 460 mm.
General Note
The work comprises edited entries from the artist's letters to his wife and from his travel journals while he was following French military campaigns. The entries, some briefer than others, cover the years 1825 to 1860 (when he died on the way to Genoa with the army) and contain some sketches. However, the majority of the sketches reproduced are to be found in the 48 photogravure plates (references to them appear in the text).
The selection of text entries and sketches were made by the artist's son, Auguste, as he explains in the 'Avertissement' where he also gives biographical information on his father.
The work is arranged in the order: half-title, title-page, dedication (A ma mère) to the wife of the artist and mother of the editor, Avertissement, text, leaves of plates. The printer is noted at the foot of page 140, 'Paris: Typ. Pillet et Dumoulin, rue des Grandes-Augustins, 5'.
Binding Note
The book's binding is in green quarter-bound leather with gilt lettering on the spine: 'Notes et Croquis de Raffet 1878' and 'R.A.'
