Summary Note

This is a reprint by Pierre Mariette of the edition of Chapron's engravings after Raphael that carried the imprint 'Romæ MDCXXXXIX Cum Privil. sum. Pontificis et Christianiss. Maiestatis Romæ in Æde D. Augustini'. Mariette's imprint has been added to the title-plate, frontispiece and all plates except nos. 24, 31, 42-45, 49-52; but the publication-date of the reprint is not given. Pierre Mariette the elder is known to have worked from rue Saint-Jacques at the sign of 'Espérance' from 1638, and Pierre Mariette the younger worked from the same address after his father's death.

The frontispiece shows a bust of Raphael, on a pedestal. The pedestal is inscribed, 'Ille Hic Est Raphael Timuit Quo Sospite Vinci Rerum Magna Parens Et Moriente Mori Non Pulvis Non Umbra Sumus Me Vivere Chapron Hic Dedit: Urbinas Ille Ego Sum Raphael' (and in this edition the additional 'Lutetiæ Parisiorum Apud Petrum Mariette via Iacobæa sub signo Spei Cum Privilegio Regis'); and the foot of the plate carries the caption, 'Ad Eximium Pictorem Nicolaum Chapron Picturam Raphael mutis revocavit ab umbris tu Chaprone iterum reddis utrique diem.'

The plates show Raphael's paintings in the Vatican loggie - plates 1-48 depicting events described in the Hebrew Bible; plates 49-52, events from the Gospels. Each is captioned with a quotation from the Bible, in Latin translation.
