Summary Note
Some copies have bound in the paper cover of this cuaderno, of which the title reads, 'Monumentos Arquitectónicos De España. Publicados de Rl. Orden y por disposicion del Ministerio de Fomento. Cuaderno No.'
Titles are in Spanish. The text is in Spanish and French in parallel.
The text is in four parts, describing, 1. the Umayyad mosque next to the gate of Bab al-Mardum, built in Toledo ca. 1000 (which became in 1187 the Ermita Del Santo Cristo De La Luz); 2. the 12th-century wall-paintings on Christian subjects found in the building in 1871; 3. the former mosque in the Casa de Las Tornerías; 4. towers of Mudejar style in Toledo. The two-storey façade, internal arcades, multi-lobed arches, blind arcades of interlocking horseshoe arches on the south-west front and the nine ribbed vaults in the ceiling of the Bab al-Mardum mosque all echo the structure of al-Hakam's extension of the Great Mosque of Córdoba. The structure of the Tornerías mosque in turn echoes that of the mosque of Bab al-Mardum; but its ribbed vaults are reduced almost to a decorative pattern prefiguring those of the muqarnas.
The plates are captioned and show: [1] plan, sections and capitals of the former mosque or Ermita Del Cristo De La Luz; [2] its Christian wall-paintings; [3] plans and sections of the mosque of Las Tornerías and its Roman foundations; [4] elevations of the exterior of the mosque of Cristo De La Luz and of various church-towers of Toledo. In-text illustrations consist of a title-page vignette, a view of the exterior arch of the mosque, two decorative headpieces and two decorative initials.
Plate [2] and all in-text illustrations apart from the title-page vignette are printed in color.
Copy Note
The paper cover is inscribed in ink with the words, 'Tom. V', and with the number '27' after the printed words 'Cuaderno No.'
