$a As the Preface explains, the work consists largely of letters written by Thomas Seddon, with just such connective passages as will make the narrative intelligible. The chapters are listed as, I. Early Life And Business Career; II. Commences His Course As An Artist; III. Residence At Dinan, And Departure For The East; IV. Egypt; V. The Pyramids; VI. Journey To Palestine; VII. Letters From Jerusalem; VIII. Return To England, And Exhibition Of Pictures; IX. Second Eastern Journey, And Death; Lecture On Egypt And The Holy Land. Seddon died in Egypt, of dysentery, in 1856. The frontispiece is an uncaptioned portrait, presumably of Thomas Seddon. The in-text illustrations show drawings of views and incidents in Egypt and Palestine. They include drawings of the artist under a sun-shade, painting a picture of the Pyramids (p.63), and of his servant disappearing into a hole in the ground (p.64). |
