Flaubert’s great novel, [originally published in 1857], is lavishly illustrated with over 250 images created for this volume by Marc Camille Chaimowicz. As with all books in the series, the text of the novel is included complete, set in a new typeface, specially comissioned for this edition, based on fonts in use in France in the 1800s.
For this edition, John Morgan Studio developed a new typeface, Berthe, named after Emma Bovary’s neglected child for an edition of Flaubert’s Madame Bovary. They commissioned and worked with Charles Mazé, who drew this bespoke version based on a Deberny specimen of Série 16 from 1894.
"This is the eighth in a series of books called Four Corners Familiars presenting artists' responses to classic novels and short stories." [Colophon].
