Summary Note

The work is a memoir of the painter J.C. Hook, R.A.; who began his career by painting Venetian historical subjects but afterwards specialised in paintings of British rural and coastal life.
The frontispiece of Volume II shows 'James Clarke Hook, R.A. From the Portrait by Millais'; that of Volume III shows a family group 'At Silverbeck 7th May 1882. Photographed by A.J. Hook'. The plate in Volume III is an 'Approximate Facsimile Of The Signature' of Andrew Hooke.
