$a The first part of the text is arranged under the following headings: 'Sujets Tirés De L'Ancien Testament'; 'Sujets Tirés Du Nouveau Testament'; 'Figures De Saints Et Sujets De Sainteté'; 'Sujets Relatifs A Savonarole'. A note printed on the verso of the half-title states the print-run: 'Tiré à 300 exemplaires.' A Dominican preacher, Savonarola came to Florence in 1490, where he denounced wordliness in the Church, in the arts, and in society and politics. His charismatic preaching prompted two great bonfires of 'vanities'; but led to his excommunication by Pope Alexander VI in 1497 and his execution in 1498. He influenced many artists, including Botticelli, Lorenzo di Credi, Fra Bartolommeo, Andrea della Robbia, Giovanni della Robbia, Baccio da Montelupo, Cronaca and Michelangelo. |
