This work was first published in 1672 (without the biography of Giordano).
It consists of Bellori's essay on 'L'Idea del Pittore ... superiore alla Natura' and thirteen biographies - of one architect (Domenico Fontana), two sculptors (Francesco di Quesnoy Fiammingo, Alessandro Algardi) and ten painters (Annibale Carracci, Agostino Caracci, Federico Barocci, Michelangelo Merigi Da Caravaggio, Pietro Paolo Rubens, Antonio Vandyck, Domenico Zampieri, Giovanni Lanfranco, Nicolò Pussino, Luca Giordano).
The biography of Poussin includes the 'Osservazioni di Nicolò Pussino sopra la Pittura. Dell'esempio de' buoni Maestri'.
The plates are portraits - accompanying each biography, except that D. Fontana's portrait is incorporated in the frontispiece. Besides the portraits and the frontispiece, there are two plates of the Belvedere Antinous / Hermes.
