Summary Note
This is a new edition of a work originally published in 1642. Passari's Life of Salvator Rosa had been added in the 'seconda impressione', Rome, 1649.
Here Baglione recounts the lives of more than two hundred artists working in Rome between 1572 and 1642. They are presented chronologically; but are accompanied by an alphabetic index of artists (by fore-name). A small number of foreign artists working in Rome (e.g. Rubens, Bril, Goltzius), and a Life of Baglione, have also been included. The text includes critical comment, and notes on patronage.
Reproductions
A microfilm was made for the British Library (PB Mic. 21286). An anastatic reprint of the 1642 edition, with full variants, notes, commentary, bibliography and index, was published in 1995 (Biblioteca Apostolica, Citta del Vaticano) (3 vols; ISBN 8821006611, 8821006646, 8821006654).
