Summary Note
The work describes the paintings of Antonio Solario, 'Il Zingaro', at the abbey of San Severino in Naples. They depict the life of St Benedict and the beginnings in western Europe of the kind of Christian monasticism already established by St Antony, St Basil and others in the east.
The plates are outline engravings. The frontispiece is a portrait of 'Lo Zingaro'; plates I-XXII are uncaptioned and show Zingaro's cycle of paintings.
