But they have a basis in historical documents, which Selvatico cites in notes. Like other critics of his day, Selvatico was concerned with the relationship between the arts and society, and between aesthetics and ethics. He deprecated the reliance on pre-Christian, ancient Greek and Roman art that had prevailed since the time of the Renaissance, and drew attention to the achievements of artists of the Gothic period. |
