$a The original woodcuts reproduced here were probably intended to be displayed as one continuous sequence. They were lettered A-H and carried Latin captions identifying the persons and things represented: A. eight standards; B. six silver trumpets; C. ambassadors' servants and trumpets; D. servants of the Doge, and canons; E. the Patriarch, the white candle and ceremonial hat; F. the chair, the cushion; G. the Doge, the umbrella, ambassadors; H. senior officials. The set may be viewed as a generic representation of a Dogal procession; but the standards in cut A are those of the Priuli, implying that the set represents either Doge Lorenzo Priuli (1556-9) or Doge Girolamo Priuli (1559-67). |
