Summary Note
This was one of the earliest monographs on a Dutch artist to include a catalogue raisonnée.
Westrheene's intention was to modify representations of Steen, that had stressed his humour and licence at the expense of his moral stance. His epigraph quotes from Sir Joshua Reynolds - who had admired Steen for his composition, use of light and shade and expression of character, but had deplored his subject-matter.
The frontispiece shows a portrait of 'Jan Stoon'.
Binding Note
19th-century half brown morocco, brown cloth-covered boards; spine lettered 'Steen - Étude Sur L'Art En Hollande.'
