$a A title variant is, 'Monumenti Scelti Della Villa Pinciana' (added engraved title-plate). The publication-date of 1821 appears on the title pages. Earlier dates are carried by eleven plates in Volume I - 1792 (pl. 4, 5, 21), 1793 (pl. 9, 28), 1794 (pl. 40, 42, 44) or 1795 (pl. 7, 18, 34) - and by two plates in Volume II - 1795 (pl. 7, 29). The plates of Volume I show ancient full-length statues, of the Borghese warrior by Agasias (two plates), Greek gods and heroes and Roman historical figures; the last two show Egyptian deities. Those of Volume II show ancient bas-reliefs (including sarcophagi), of mythological subjects, the Borghese Vase, portrait busts (of Antinous, various emperors and empresses, and philosophers), a vase on an altar, two statues of Amor; and two modern statues, by Bernini (the Apollo and Daphne, and the David). The most celebrated sculptures in the collection were sold to Napoleon in 1807 by Prince Camillo Borghese, and are now in the Louvre. These include the 'Borghese Warrior' by Agasias (Vol. I. pl. 1, 2), the Zingarella/Diana (pl. 3), the Centaur with Cupid (pl. 4), Silenus with the Infant Bacchus (pl. 6), the camillus (pl. 14), the Diana 'de Gabies' (pl. 18), Faun with pipes (pl. 24), Hermaphroditus (26), Nymph with shell (32), Apollo Sauroctonus (40), the 'Borghese Dancers' (Vol. II. pl. 1), and the 'Borghese Vase' (II: 10, 11). |
