$a At the rear of Volume I is pasted in an autograph letter from Stendhal in Italian, presenting this copy of the work 'of a friend' to Henry Sass, with the request that he will encourage other art-lovers in London to read it. The letter carries the date of '20 Dicembre' and states that the three last volumes of his book will appear in 1820. Presentation of the copy to the Royal Academy was acknowledged on 12 January 1819 (CM VI, 27-8). Henry Sass's own A Journey To Rome ... Containing Observations On The Fine Arts appeared in 1818.
