$a A note on the title-page verso states that the work was 'Read before the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, April 1871', and that 'The Fifty Copies now printed for private circulation contain additional matter, with different and more numerous illustrations.' The first plate forms a divisional title-plate, reading 'Illustrations Targets & Shields'. The following six plates show: 1. Macdonald Target; 2, 3. Highland Targets; 4. Bronze Shields; 5. Various Shields For Comparison; 6. Roman Legionary Sculptured Stone. The in-text illustrations show parts of shields. James Drummond combined the career of a history painter with that of a student of European and Asian antiquities, and read many papers before the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland. |
