$a This work was based on the work of the same title by L. Agostini and G.P. Bellori (1657 and 1669). De' Rossi was the printer/publisher who engaged Maffei to write the text after the success of their work together on the title Raccolta di statue antiche e moderne (Rome, 1704). Parts one and two of the Gemme antiche figurate appeared in 1707, part three in 1708 and part four in 1709.
