510 0 # $a On the disposal of the collection see F. Herrmann, The English As Collectors A Documentary Sourcebook (1999), p.133-45; W. Buchanan, Memoirs of Painting (1824); A Catalogue of the Orleans Italian pictures which will be exhibited for sale (1798); The Orleans Gallery now exhibiting (1793).
520 2 # $a The publication-dates of the three volumes are given on their title-plate/pages as: Volume I, 1786 (with one pl. carrying the date 1790, another 1806, and the 'Notice Historique' referring to events of 1806); Volume II, 1808 (with one plate carrying the date 1788, another 'An. 8.', and two 1807); Volume III, 1808 (with one plate carrying the date 1794, another 'An. 8.'). The work appears to have been published serially: the 'Table De La Galerie' in Volume I lists each plate with the number of its livraison.

The title-pages of Volumes II, III have 'Tome Second (Troisième)' in place of 'Par Mr. L'Abbé ... son Cabinet', and the imprint of 'Laporte' in place of that of 'J. Bouillard'.

The work descibes the paintings that were a part of the celebrated Orléans collection. In 1791 the then duc d'Orléans sold most of the collection to the banker Edouard Walkiers, who disposed of them in three auctions in London between 1793 and 1800.
