A Note on p.[4] states that this book was printed to form part of a larger work (see our note on collation); and several pages carry the words 'Vol. II.' at the foot. The 'Preliminary Essay' had been first published privately in 1841; and the complete work was published in 1843 as 'The Theory, Practice and Architecture of Bridges'.
