Summary Note
The three title plates end abruptly, 'Volume the '; but each volume contains a list of plates under the heading, 'Volume I (- III)'. The work was published serially, and the letterpress at the end of Volume III lists the number of parts as 40, each containing 5 plates, part 1 being published in 1861, pts. 2-5 in 1862, pts. 6-12 in 1863, pts. 13-20 in 1864, pts. 21-28 in 1865, pts. 29-32 in 1866, pts. 33-38 in 1867 and pts. 39 and 40 in 1868.
The letter-press in Volume III indicates that the prints could be bought separately at the following prices: 'Prints £1. 1s. Proofs £1. 11s. 6d. Artist's Proofs £2. 2s.'
Most plates reproduce portraits. The work was designed to form a continuation of S. W. Reynolds's five-volume series of Engravings from the works of Sir Joshua Reynolds, for proof impressions of which the Academy had subscribed on 13 March 1820 (Council Minutes, VI, 195-6).
Provenance
The RA Council resolved on 26 November 1864 to purchase two volumes of the 'Continuation of Engraved Works of Reynolds published by H. Graves & Co.' (RA Council Minutes, XII, 203). Part nos. 22 & 23 were purchased in 1865; nos. 24-32 in 1866; 33-36 in 1867; nos. 37 & 38 in 1868; and nos. 39 & 40 in 1869 (see RA Annual Reports).
