$a The fresco-painter Palomino de Castro y Velasco is now perhaps better known for his book, Museo pictórico y escala óptica (2 vols., 1715-24); which includes El Parnaso español pintoresco, translated here. Palomino includes anecdotes of several painters whom he knew himself, including Velázquez. The German text translates the 126 biographies of Palomino's original, and adds two more - one of Palomino, the other of Mengs. It is printed in black-letter. There are no plates. The title-page vignette shows two putti looking at a painting on an easel; the tailpiece at the end of biography no. 127 shows an allegoric female figure in a cloud. |
