The work describes Ostia and the neighbouring Portus, with the harbours constructed during the reigns of Claudius (41-54) and Trajan (98-117).
The first plate is a map of Ostia; the second, an imaginary view of the reconstructed harbour. The in-text illustration on page 5 reproduces two ancient Roman coins which show the harbour of Ostia.
