$a G.B. Armenini's treatise had first been published in 1586 (reissued in 1587). Though Armenini draws on earlier Renaissance treatises, his focus is on experience and training. It was published in a period when academies of art were being established at Rome, Bologna, Florence and elsewhere. In the first two books the author addresses practical aspects of painting (disegno, lume, ombra, colorito, componimento); in the third, iconography and the suitability of subjects for specific sites. He ends with a description of his idea of the perfect painter. |
