Summary Note
The work was first printed in 1691. A revision (completed by J.B.A. Le Blond) was published posthumously in 1710. Mariette's further extensive revision was first published in 1738.
D'Aviler intended his work to be a practical and up-to-date manual for client, builder and student; and he made an important innovation by including in an architectural treatise material on domestic architecture. His book became a model for French 18th-century house publications. Mariette's revision includes contemporary plans and elevations and architectural details.
The work went through four major French editions and had thirteen French printings. An English version, Vignola revived, appeared in 1761.
