This work, and the Colonna eretta in memoria dell'Apoteosi di Antonino Pio e Faustina (ca. 1779) form a sequel to Piranesi's Trofeo O Sia Magnifica Colonna Coclide ... Da Traiano (ca. 1774). The plates show the column of Marcus Aurelius:[1] elevations of the column as restored, before restoration, and as it may originally have looked, [2] a plan of the column, [3] a large, folding view of the column, showing the bas-reliefs of Marcus Aurelius's campaigns against the Germans and Sarmatians. |
