Summary Note

The text is an account of honors and ranks in social, political and religious spheres.

The title-page title is set within an elaborate engraved border - which is repeated on the divisional title-pages of Parts 2-12 of the text. Parts 2-12 each have a full-page woodcut illustration on the verso of its divisional title-page; Part 1 has two full-page woodcuts (on leaves b5 verso and b6 recto), and 51 smaller heraldic devices and diagrams. In Part 11 leaf dDd3 verso carries a remarkable woodcut showing a printing-press in operation. (F. Madan's 'Early representations of the printing-press' in Bibliographica 1:2 (1895), p.223-48, records no representation of a press earlier than 1548 - apart from a few occurring as a printer's device or as part of some larger subject.) The verso of the last leaf carries the bookseller/publisher's name and motto 'Salve Sancta Facies' within a border showing events in Christ's Passion.

Provenance

The front pastedown is inscribed in pencil, 'S.A.H.', i.e. S.A. Hart, librarian of the Royal Academy 1864-81. Purchased for RA Library in 1879 (see RA Annual Report for 1879, p. 47).
