The text is in three books, with an appendix. The first book describes the antiquity of painting, the most important of the arts, a propagation of Christianity. The second summarises theories of Leonardo da Vinci, Alberti, Raphael, Cespedes, with some of Pacheco's own views. The third stresses the need to study nature and the great artists. The appendix is a prescriptive iconography of Christian subjects.

The verso of the front loose endpaper is inscribed in pencil, 'S:A:H', i.e. S.A. Hart, librarian of the Royal Academy 1864-81.
