Earlier dates are carried by some plates - of 1856 (pl. 34, 45, 83) or 1857 (pl. 57, 74). The work was first published serially, in probably 15 wrappers. (The Royal Academy's first set includes fifteen wrappers. The first ten are numbered 1-10 [except that the fifth carries the printed number 4 with the number 5 overwritten by hand] and each calls for 5 plates; the eleventh carries the printed number '11 & 12' and carries the printed word 'plates' but does not specify their number; the remaining four carry no printed numbers nor the word 'plates', but have been inscribed by hand in ink, '13&14', '15&16', '17&18' and '19&20'.) A title-variant is printed on the upper parts of the wrappers that are retained in some sets: 'Architectural Sketches from the Continent A Series of Views and Details from France Italy & Germany By Richard Norman Shaw Archt.
