$a Adriaan van den Spiegel (Adrianus Spigelius) was a Flemish anatomist who studied and practiced medicine in Padua. His most famous work on anatomy, published posthumously in 1627, was De humani corporis fabrica libri X tabulis aere icisis exornati which was seen as an update of Vesalius's work. The work published here as two volumes in one, edited by Daniel Bucretius, opens with a half-title (Adriani Spigellii Bruxellensis opera omnia quæ extant.) followed by an engraved illustrated title-page signed by Odoardo Fialetti ('Odoardus Fialettij delineauit'). In this copy the engraved portrait of Spiegel by Jeremias Flack appears facing the title-page to vol. 1 (Adriani Spigelii Bruxellensis Anatomica operum omnium tomus I). The separate title-pages for both vol. 1 and vol. 2 have Blaeu's device, an armillary sphere with motto "Indefessus agendo". The Roman numerals in the date are formed with reversed Cs. |
