$a This appears to be a version of Severall Wayes of Hunting, Hawking, & Fishing according to the English Manner, published in 1671 (with plates drawn by Francis Barlow and etched by Wenceslaus Hollar; sold by John Overton). No publication-date is given on the present title-plate or any of the plates. The figures on the title-plate appear to be wearing 18th-century dress; but it appears that there were two Henry Overtons operating as print-sellers from 'the White Horse without Newgate' - the first from 1704 to 1751, and the second from 1753 to 1765. The plates are captioned and show: [title-page] mounted huntsmen, dogs and stag at the kill; 1. 'Stagg Hunting'; 2. 'Coursing Fallow Deere'; 1. 'Hare Hunting'; 3. 'Fox Hunting'; 4. 'Otter Hunting'; 2. 'Cony Catching'; 3. 'Partridge Hawking'; 5. 'Hern Hawking'; 4. 'Feasant Hawking'; 6. 'Salmon Fishing'; 5. 'River Fishing'; 6. 'Angling'. Each plate (including the title-plate) also carries a short verse. Barlow's original drawing for 'Hare Hunting' is conserved at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. |
