They show herdsmen with buffaloes, oxen, bulls, cows, sheep, goats and dogs in the Roman campagna on bright, wintry days. Two plates show herdsmen driving their animals in the City itself (pl. 12, 33).

Charles Coleman settled in Rome as a young man about 1835 and remained there for the rest of his life. He was a painter as well as engraver. His son, Enrico Coleman (1846-1911), became known as a painter of the Roman campagna.
