$a The date of publication is given more fully at the end of the text as '1st. October, 1837'; and the Supplement contains letters carrying the dates of November and December 1837. The work is a Postscript to a Memoir which had been published earlier the same year. It was published separately, i.e. without a reprint of the Memoir (see footnote, p.4). The text enlarges on the brief contrast which the author had made in the Memoir between the work of Wyon for the Royal Mint and the less prolific output of Benedetto Pistrucci - whose cause had been taken up by William Richard Hamilton. In 1828 Pistrucci had been appointed Chief Medallist to the Royal Mint, with William Wyon as Chief Engraver. A considerable conflict was waged by the partisans of the two men. The main text is followed by letters, 1, 2. between N. Carlisle and Robt. Bingley (Royal Mint); 3-8. between William Rd. Hamilton and N. Carlisle. These letters carry dates ranging from June 1836 to September 1837. The Supplement contains further letters, 1. from Ld. Wallace to N. Carlisle; 2-4. between Ld. Wallace and W.R. Hamilton. These carry dates ranging from November to December 1837. |
