$a The son of a Latvian immigrant, Henry Sass entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1805, trained as an artist, and exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1807 and 1839. In 1813 he advertised his School of Drawing; but from 1815 to 1817 travelled in Europe. From 1818 his School, established as a 'probationary school' for the Royal Academy and the British Institution, trained many successful artists. Sass's Journey to Rome was adversely criticised in Annals of the fine arts (3/9, 1819), but was praised by Stendhal. |
