Summary Note

Reynolds's first Discourse was delivered at the opening of the Academy on 2 January 1769; the remainder were delivered in December at the Academy's awards of prizes to students - numbers II-V annually (1769-1772), numbers VI-XV every two years (1774-1790) with the exception of number IX, delivered in October 1780 to mark the Academy's move into Somerset House.

Inscribed in black ink at the head of the half-title: `Dec:r 10.th ---. 1782.' And in another hand below this: `from H.W. Drummond [?] to Joseph Durham [?]. (Walpole's Copy)'. [Possibly the politician, banker and poet Henry Drummond (1786-1860) to Joseph Durham ARA (1814-1877). Inscribed in black ink in another hand next to the first paragraph on page 17: `Dutch painters we despise - The grand effect our study is - Their trifling we neglect. ---'
