$a “When I began to compile a “Dictionary of Artists,” my intention was to issue a new edition every ten years; but the responsibilities of the publishing house of Henry Graves and Co. which had been managed by my father nearly until his death in 1892, compelled me to abandon that idea, and decide to bring the work, in its present more copious and enlarged form, down to 1893, including the Winter as well as the Summer Exhibitions of every important London gallery. Besides adding all the new exhibitors of the last thirteen years, I have, through the whole range of the present work, made many improvements which were suggested by the use of the first version. By the introduction of the two great water-colour societies, the record of artists in the medium is now complete; the Portland Gallery brings Rossetti into view and the “Associated Artists” includes many early English water-colour painters who did not join the Old Society. The Dudley “Black and White” introduces many engravers and etchers who are celebrated in those interesting branches of design. In the column describing Various Exhibitions (incorporated to save space) it will be possible by the dates which are given in the “List of Exhibitions” to recognize the different Societies.” [Preface to the second edition]
