$a [Second copy:] The front pastedown carries the armorial bookplate of Lord Viscount Dillon, which is inscribed in pencil, 'C. ffoulkes 1914'. Viscount Dillon (Harold Arthur Lee-Dillon, 1844-1932) was Antiquary of the Royal Academy from 1903 to 1932, and a close friend of museum-curator Charles John ffoulkes (1868-1947), whose mother was the grand-daughter of the author of this book. ffoulkes may have presented this copy (along with Strange's vitriolic Inquiry into the rise and establishment of the Royal Academy of Arts, 1775) in 1935 partly at least in memory of the Academy's former Antiquary. [Third copy:] The front pastedown carries the armorial bookplate of Edward Goddard. The verso of the front loose endpaper is inscribed in pencil 'S:A:H', i.e. S.A. Hart R.A., Librarian of the Royal Academy 1864-81. |
