Summary Note
The text contains extensive translations by Falkener from a manuscript by Onorio Belli, a Venetian physician and polymath who travelled in Crete in the 16th century, and left valuable records of its plant-species and remains of its Roman theatres. Falkener presents these translations as a supplement to the Museum of Classical Antiquities, a periodical which he edited from 1851 to 1853.

Provenance
The front loose endpaper is inscribed in ink, 'Presented to the Library of The Royal Academy by Edward Falkener G.M. Student' (this probably refers to Falkener's winning the Royal Academy's gold medal in 1839). A signed autograph letter from Edward Falkener to T. Uwins Esquire RA Librarian, carrying the date of 8 Nov [?] 1854, is tipped in, requesting the Royal Academy's acceptance of his essay. The verso of the front loose endpaper is inscribed in pencil, 'HWP', i.e. H.W. Pickersgill, R.A., librarian of the Royal Academy 1856-64.
