$a No publication-date is carried by the title page; but Dennistoun states that it was advertised immediately after Sir Robert's death in 1792, and had been planned by him before that. Several plates carry dates - of 1753, 1755, 1759, 1765, 1767, 1768, 1769, 1770, 1771, 1773, 1774, 1777, 1778, 1780, 1781, 1787. (some of these carry both a date of engraving and an earlier date of etching.) Plate [1] (frontispiece) is a portrait of the author by J.B. Greuze. Plates [2-50] show paintings by Wouvermans [pl. 2], Vanloo [3], Guido [4-7, 10, 18, 21, 22, 25, 32, 39, 46], Carlo Maratt [8, 9], Andrea Sacchi [11], Pietro Da Cortona [12, 13], Vandyke [14, 29, 43, 44, 49], Salvator Rosa [15, 36], Dominichino [16], Nicolas Poussin [17], Raphael [19, 20, 31, 47], Guercino [23, 24, 33, 37], Titian [26-28, 38], Correggio [30, 42], Parmigiano [34], Schidoni [35, 41], West [45], Carlo Dolci [48], Murillo [50]. As a specialist in 'Historical Prints' Strange has included few portraits. Those which he has included are of four paintings by Van Dyke of King Charles I and his family (pl. 14, 29, 43, 44), and Benjamin West's painting of the 'Apotheosis of the royal children' (of King George III), the print for which Strange was knighted in 1787. Most of his chosen paintings show Christian subjects or subjects from Greek mythology or Greek and Roman history. |
562 | # | # | $a Some smaller plates are remounted to match the size of the other sheets (pl. 2-4, 6-9, 34, 40, 42); while the largest plates (pl. 37, 38, 43-46) have been conserved separately (PC 1/6). |
