No-one will ever be in doubt that Spielmann did not know the worth of Alfred Gilbert. He thinks the suggestion to approach the
Earl of Crawford would appeal to Gilbert. He thinks that if Gilbert had not been driven out it is possible that the "flaunting art of the Café Royal" would not have been countenanced.
Hampton told him recently that he thought Gilbert had the most poetic imagination of any sculptor.
