Historical Background
This and the two precding letters in this series, RAA/SEC/4/50/7-8, were read at the meeting of Council of 15 May 1883, which took the decision taken to place a rail along the whole of the west side of Gallery II.
Content Description
Frith asks for protection for his picture in the Summer Exhibition, 'The Private View, 1881', from the crowds pressing around it. The owner of the painting expects it to be delivered to him in the condition in which he purchased it. Frith suggests that the Council place a rail around the whole of Gallery II at a suitable distance for spectators.
