They are moored briefly at Plymouth. Two sailor friends of
Herbert's are aboard, but it is otherwise quiet. He worries for her, wishes her rest, and expresses self-loathing over his selfishness and temper. He feels he cannot go on with his "absorbed" life, which is destroying the "best parts" of his nature. He feels they now grow old and should enjoy refined things together.
