Transcriptions by the artist's son, Charles J. Marshall, of letters in his possession. Charles states, in his introduction that the letters were written during W.C. Marshall's European journey of 1836 to 1839. They are characterised as the vigorous and unselfconscious letters of an excited young Englishman abroad.
