Most of the material in this series either refers directly to the history of this particular archive (as in the correspondence with Wedderburn concerning Ruskins letters), or relates to an extended project to document the genealogy of the Richmond family.

Elements of this series dramatically pre-date the twentieth century. There is no context to explain the presence of nineteenth century correspondence relating to the Robins and Hallam families, other than the presumption that they have a bearing on the history of the Richmonds.

All of the papers in this series appear to have been brought together after the death of George Richmond. Several hands are evident in relation to the provenance of the material. Firstly Thomas Knyvett Richmond appears to have attempted to bring together elements of the family's past, as his intervention appears throughout the rest of the archive it is clear that he did have a keen interest in the subject. After his death the torch appears to have been passed to John Richmond, the youngest of the Richmond children. There is ample evidence here that John Richmond and his wife actively pursued genealogy and that this was in turn passed to their son Anthony Richmond. Tony Richmond appears to have worked on genealogy during the 1920's and then taken up the hobby once more after his retirement in 1973.
