Historical Background

It is likely that the Duchess in question is Caroline, Duchess of Marlborough (1743-1811). A version of her portrait by Sir Joshua Reynolds had appeared in a sale in the summer of 1796 (Mannings says that it was bought in by Inchiquin).

Content Description

Thanking Humphry for his offer to clean the Duchess of Marlborough's picture. Mr Eliot, the upholsterer of Bond Street, will call and take a measure of it for a frame, both for it and the glass that will hang below it. She no longer thinks it necessary to narrow the canvas as once discussed.
