Worsley had made Gibson's acquaintance in Rome in the winter of 1821-22. He possessed a marble group of 'Samson Slaying a Philistine', which was unboubtedly by
Giovanni da Bologna. He cites the provenance of the work, which had been been given to his grandfather by
King George III. The Government had made overtures to him to purchase the work and, as usual, they were niggardly in regard to price. Worsley had asked £3,500 for the group. He asks Gibson to advise him whether the sum he had named was too high or to low.
