Content Description
Copy of the Secretary's reply to Spencer's letter of 23 April 1935: the laws of the Academy, which Spencer had undertaken to observe, stated that no application for changing the situation of any work in the exhibition could be permitted after the arrangement had been sanctioned by Council. The three works accepted for display: 'Scarecrow, Cookham', 'Workmen in the House' and 'Builders' had therefore to remain until the close of the exhibition. The other two works: 'St Francis and the Birds' and 'Lovers' could be removed by Spencer's agent at any time. The power of the Council to omit works by members had often been exercised, and such action had always been accepted without demur. The question of Spencer's resignation was a separate matter, and would shortly come before Council, unless Spencer were to reconsider it in the meantime.
