Historical Background

A committee "into the study of Art" was appointed by the Council in December 1942. It was a "small committee", consisting of G. F. Kelly, (chairman), the Treasurer, Sir Edwin Cooper, Henry Rushbury, A. K. Lawrence and Charles Wheeler, appointed "to consider the maintenance of the study of art in the Royal Academy, (1) during the war, when the Schools were in abeyance owing to enemy action, and (2) when they could be reopened and courses of study could be recommenced; to obtain suggestions from the Members either in person or in writing; to co-opt, if they thought fit, other Members to the Committee; and to report their recommendations to the Council". The Committee reported in July 1945.
