Historical Background
The second of these papers constitutes the text of a broadcast talk by
Sir Francis Newbolt made on 2 July 1930, in response to an attack made on the summer exhibition by
Harold Nicholson, for which
Lord Reith issued an unreserved apology on behalf of the BBC governors. The first paper may be a preparatory draft of information for the same talk.
