Historical Background

A resolution was passed that Henry Tanworth Wells should compose a paper on the RA's finances after he spoke on the subject at the General Assembly of 29 May 1883. Both his paper and that of the Treasurer in response were read at the General Assembly of 30 November 1883, after which a resolution (proposed by J. E. Millais) was passed nem. con. that the financial condition of the RA was a sound one, and admitted to any reasonable addition to annual expenditure.

Content Description

Paper for the President and Council by H. T. Wells on the finances of the Royal Academy, 14 May 1883, with supporting tables of figures, and draft copy; and paper in response by the Treasurer, John Callcott Horsley, with supporting tables of figures, October 1883. Wells maintained that the RA needed to curb its annual expenditure.
